The Majesty of the Sitar
The Sitar is Hindustani classical music’s most famous plucked string instrument, celebrated worldwide for its sympathetic resonance strings (Taraf) and curved frets (Parda) that allow Meend (pitch bends) across multiple notes.
1. Kharaj Pancham Style (Ravi Shankar Style — 7 Main Strings)
Features 7 main playing strings including deep bass Kharaj strings and a second upper Tumba gourd attached to the neck. Produces a deep, resonant, orchestral sound spectrum.
2. Gandhar Pancham Style (Vilayat Khan Style — 6 Main Strings)
Features 6 main strings with no upper gourd. Emphasizes bright vocal-style (Gayaki Ang) speed and agility in higher octaves.
3. Materials & Tuning (Jwari Bridge)
A seasoned Tun Wood or Teak Wood body with a hand-carved bone Jwari bridge creates the signature buzzing overtone resonance of classical Ragas.
