Alto vs. Tenor Saxophone for Beginners

By JBX Music Academy Faculty • Published August 2026

The Iconic Voice of Jazz & Pop

The saxophone is revered for its expressive, vocal-like tone. Choosing between an Eb Alto and a Bb Tenor saxophone determines key ergonomics and lung capacity requirements.

1. Alto Saxophone in Eb (Recommended for 90% of Beginners)

Smaller neck curvature, lighter weight, and smaller key spacing. Requires less air volume to produce tone, making it ideal for young students and adult beginners (e.g. Yamaha YAS-280).

2. Tenor Saxophone in Bb

Larger body with a distinctive curved neck ("S-bend"). Produces a deeper, husky jazz tone (think John Coltrane), but requires stronger breath support and larger hand reach (e.g. Yamaha YTS-280).
