Understanding Noise Cancellation in Audio Cables
Using the wrong audio cable can introduce ground loop buzz and RF noise into studio monitor speakers and audio interface recordings.
1. Balanced Cables (XLR & 1/4-inch TRS)
Balanced cables use 3 conductors (Hot, Cold, Ground). The receiving device reverses the polarity of the Cold wire, cancelling out electrical noise picked up along long cable runs (Common-Mode Rejection).
2. Unbalanced Cables (1/4-inch TS Instrument Cables)
Unbalanced TS cables have 2 conductors (Tip & Sleeve). Standard for electric guitars and short instrument runs under 15 feet to prevent high-frequency signal loss.
