HSS vs SSS vs HH Pickups: Choosing Your Tone

By JBX Music Academy Faculty • Published August 2026

Understanding Electric Guitar Pickups

Pickups act as the electronic microphones of an electric guitar. The type and placement of pickups dictate whether your guitar produces glass-like Fender clean tones, warm Gibson jazz warmth, or heavy distortion.

1. SSS (3 Single-Coil Pickups)

Classic Stratocaster layout. Delivers bright, bell-like treble and signature "quack" tones ideal for funk, blues, pop, and clean rhythm playing.

2. HH (2 Humbucker Pickups)

Classic Les Paul / SG layout. Dual coils buck the 60Hz electronic hum, producing thick, warm, high-output distortion perfect for hard rock, metal, and heavy solos.

3. HSS (Humbucker - Single - Single) — The Ultimate Versatile Config

Combines a bridge humbucker for high-gain rock solos with neck & middle single-coils for clean chord rhythm. Recommended by JBX Music Academy for 90% of beginner electric guitarists (e.g. Yamaha Pacifica 112V).
